Europe GJ 2023/24 - Continental Final

A european final of GameJam+ represents one of the continental finals , that take place within the worldwide GameJam+ initiative.

After the local GameJam+ events held in various countries in October 2023, more than 600 aspiring teams took part, building a game from scratch in 48 hours, 400 teams will compete in the continental finals for a place in the acceleration phase of the global initiative.

A The european final will gather 12 teams. Out of these 12, 8 will move on to the next stage.

Between the 22nd of february (thrusday) and the 25th of ffebruary (sunday)The European finalists, the European GJ+ Local Organizers, the GJ+ World Structure, Startup Madeira, the eGames Lab and Digital Valley will be in Madeira for this great moment.

For three days, participants will take part in various activities that promote recognition of Madeira's gaming ecosystem, its opportunities and investment incentives, while meeting teams from around the world who are taking part in the accelerator program Gaming Startup Retreat. The organization has also prepared initiatives to promote Madeira's tourism and culture, giving participants access to emblematic places in the region.

This is a program promoted by Startup Madeirawithin the activities of the eGames Lab consourtium,, and developed by Digital Valley Portugal - portuguese national partner of the worldwide GameJam+ structure.

Dates & Venues:

The European Final will take place between February 22nd and 24th on the island of Madeira. It will be an opportunity to bring together all the European semi-finalists, the global organization, local GJ+ organizations, guests and the community.

About GameJam+

A GameJam+ is the largest game development marathon and acceleration process of the world.One of the main goals of this initiative is to develop the best games into marketable products of interest to investors, in a great journey led by varios players from the world's creative economy ecosystem.

Between 2017 e 2021, it reached around 3.800 participants in more than 100 cities in 30 countries.In total, 800 games have been development within GameJam+. 800 jogos.

GameJam+ emcompasses a number of stages, from the execution of GameJam's all aroung the globe, to the incubation of the best game ideas, continental qualifiers, game acceleration moments and a grand world final. All this process takes place over a period of 8 months.

Regulation

This regulation defines the conditions of access, rights and obligations for the participation in GameJam Madeira, a program promoted by Startup Madeira, in partnership with Digital Valley Portugal, within the scope of the eGames Lab consourtium.

01. Scope and general information

GameJam+ Madeira is an intensive 48h game development marathon 48h organized within the global initiative GameJam+ 

The GameJam+ Madeira will be held simultaneously alongside all the GameJam's organized around the globe. At 19h [GMT] on Friday 20th, the organization will reveal the theme and guidelines that the teams have to take into consideration upon the development of the game.

Between the 20th of october [friday] and the 22nd of october [sunday], the teams will focus on developing a game concept and a minimum prototype. During this time, there will be a certified group of mentors from different backgrounds and expertises [game design; marketing and monetization, development, sound engineering, etc], that will guide the teams. 

At the end of the 3rd day [Sunday 22nd], the teams will submit their game to a platform to be evaluated by a global jury. 

The ideas/games selected by the global jury will move on to the incubation stage.

It will take place at Reitoria da Universidade da Madeira - Colégio dos Jesuítas

02. Goals

  • Leverage the region's video game and creative ecosystem;
  • Expand the global network in this industry;
  • Involve the student and local community in an intensive video game marathon;
  • Provide a space for networking and sharing between participants, local organizations and national and international mentors;
  • Demonstrate the various activities and games developed by the eGames Lab consortium;
  • Designing an innovative strategic future;
  • Support teams in developing new ideas;
  • Foster collaboration and joint intervention between the ecosystem, companies in the sector and invited guests.

03. Participants

Registration to participate in GameJam+ is open to all community [from students, developers, professionals, digital nomads, curious, etc..].

Participation in GameJam+ Madeira will de done in teams [between 2 to 5 people].

It is important to have some interest in the gaming and creative ecosystem.

Requirements: 

  • Participants have to bring their own computers/laptops.
  • On the day before the start of GameJam+ Madeira [october 19th], there will be a introduction session to explain all the details, softwares that can be used and the chance to network with the guest mentors.

04. Registrations

A The registration in this initiative is done through GameJam+'s worldwide platform.

The initiative is limited to the participation of 40 people, and the organization may close registrations after reaching the established limit.

Participation in this initiave has no cost included to the participants.

It is the responsibility of each participant to ensure the intellectual property rights of their idea, if they so wish. The organization does not guarantee the originality or protection of published ideas, projects or concepts. 

08. Data Protection

  1. Candidates accept the collection and processing of their personal data by Startup Madeira, the business incubator responsible for promoting projects and events in the areas of entrepreneurship, innovation, industrial property and support for new business initiatives in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, for the purposes of participating and the development of Game Jam Madeira.
  2. Within the scope of GameJam Madeira, the following personal data of participants will be processed: name, cell phone, email and job.
  3. The data referred to in the previous paragraph will be used by Startup Madeira for all purposes necessary for the development of the GameJam Madeira program, and may only be transmitted to third parties for purposes related to said program, namely for operational and financing control and execution and for carrying out all mandatory audits under legal or regulatory terms.
  4. The data will be kept by Startup Madeira for the mandatory verification period.
  5. Without prejudice to the provisions of the preceding paragraphs, applicants may authorize (in their respective registration) that the data provided by them within the scope of GameJam Madeira be used by Startup Madeira within the scope of other programs that this entity is carrying out or will develop in the future, committing this entity, in this case, to keep this data for a maximum period of ten years.
  6. Candidates authorize the use of their image, voice, photograph and/or video, collected on the platform and/or at events held under GameJam Madeira, for the purpose of promoting and disseminating the ideas developed, anywhere in the world and by any means.
  7. All holders of personal data provided within the scope of GameJam Madeira enjoy the following rights with regard to the processing of their personal data:
    • Right to information: data subjects have the right to know the identity and contact details of the entities responsible for processing their personal data, the purpose and legal basis of the processing, the period for which the data will be stored and the recipients of the data, all of which information is set out in this Regulation.
    • Right of access: whenever requested, the data subject can obtain confirmation as to whether their personal data is processed by Startup Madeira, as well as the terms in force for such processing. You also have the right to receive a free copy of your personal data being processed; however, if you request more than one copy, you may be charged administrative costs from the second request onwards.
    • Right to rectification: whenever the data subject considers that their personal data is incomplete or inaccurate, they may request that it be rectified, updated or completed, and Startup Madeira undertakes to rectify or update it within a maximum period of fifteen days.
    • Right to object and right to erasure: The data subject may object to their data continuing to be used by Startup Madeira, or may request that their data be deleted from the respective databases, provided that they are not essential to the development of the ongoing programs; since some data are required by law for the pursuit of GameJam Madeira, the data subject may only object to their use or demand their deletion after the program has ceased, i.e. when the personal data are no longer necessary for the purpose for which they were collected and processed.
    • Right to restriction of processing: the data subject may request the restriction of processing if they contest the accuracy of their personal data for a period of time that allows the entity responsible to verify its accuracy, if they consider the processing to be unlawful, if they consider that Startup Madeira no longer needs their personal data, or if they have objected to the processing.
    • Right to portability: the data subject may ask Startup Madeira to provide them with the personal data they have provided, in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format, and/or they may ask for their data to be transmitted to a third party, provided this is technically possible.
    • Right to be notified in the event of a breach of your personal data: in the event of any breach of your personal data that may constitute a high risk to the rights and freedoms of the data subject, Startup Madeira undertakes to notify the data subject of this occurrence as soon as possible.
    • Right to lodge complaints with the supervisory authority: if you wish to lodge a complaint regarding matters related to the processing of your personal data, the data subject may do so with the National Data Protection Commission, the competent supervisory authority in Portugal, accessible at cnpd.pt.
  8. Startup Madeira undertakes to ensure and respect all these rights of the holders of personal data.
  9. To exercise any of these rights, the data subject may contact the person responsible at Startup Madeira for this purpose at info@startupmadeira.eu.
  10. Data subjects give their express consent to the processing of their personal data for the purposes referred to in paragraphs 1, 5 and 6 of the current regulation, which ensures the lawfulness of the processing, under the terms of Article 6(1)(a) and (b) of the GDPR, and provides a legal basis for the processing.
  11. In the event that it becomes necessary to process any additional personal data for the aforementioned purposes or for any other purposes, Startup Madeira will always take care to communicate this to the data subjects, requesting their consent where applicable, and again providing them with all the information necessary for them to understand the reason for and conditions of the processing.
  12. Startup Madeira will never use the personal data processed to make automated decisions or define profiles.
  13. Any disputes arising from the validity, interpretation or execution of these Regulations, or which are related to the collection, processing or transmission of personal data, must be submitted to Portuguese jurisdiction, more specifically to the Madeira District Court, without prejudice to the applicable mandatory legal rules.
  14. Startup Madeira is committed to guaranteeing the protection and security of the personal data made available to it, having approved and implemented strict technical and organizational rules in this regard, in order to protect the personal data made available to it against its dissemination, loss, misuse, alteration, unauthorized processing or access, as well as against any other form of unlawful processing; in addition, it undertakes to comply with all legal and regulatory provisions that govern, or will govern, the privacy and protection of personal data, and undertakes to keep all its rules, practices and IT equipment up to date in order to safeguard the integrity and confidentiality of the personal data it processes.
  15. If, and whenever, there are changes to the processing of your personal data, or if it is necessary to amend this Regulation, Startup Madeira will inform all data subjects and collect new consents.

09. Confidentiality

  1. Participants must include only public information on the form, excluding all confidential information.
  2. All members involved in the organization of GameJam+ Madeira undertake not to misuse any document or information contained in the application, as well as to ensure the security of personal data and respect for the data protection policy, and safeguard in their actions respect for the authorship of ideas and projects.

A GameJam+ Madeira will be done in teams [2 to 5 people], so gather your friends and colleagues and challenge yourself.

Observation: You can also register individually. The organization will then place you in a team.

Limit of participants: The initiative is limited to 40 participants, and the organization may close registrations once the limit has been reached.

Costs: Participation is completely free of charge.
